house of rubber (founded by marlou breuls) is an amsterdam-based multidisciplinary practice that makes things from things that are actually not very handy to make things from, but turn out to be super fun things. mundane and functional things transform into tactile, absurd, and otherworldly things through playful experimentation, happy accidents, and complete material obsession. things that wobble, things that shimmer, things that look wet but really aren’t, things that beg you to lick them and things that almost always seem to have grown an extra pair of limbs. we make these things (while trying not to be tempted by all the other things) using textiles, ceramics, and rubber, occasionally venturing into soft robotics. all the things mentioned above result in creations that provoke curiosity, embody humor, cause a little (social) discomfort, and occasionally (and unfortunately) need a forklift to move.

every thing emerges from hands-on exploration, extreme tactility, and our self-built liquid shooting machine, turning rubber (and all those other things) into things that stretch and bounce, embodying the endless flexibility of house of rubber. from latex bodysuits and ball gown rugs to ceramic cabinets and dripping rubber jewelry, the works explore the relationships between body, object, and space. projects like curly girl, an impossible-to-move ceramic sculpture born from a supersized clay extruder at ekwc, or lady in rug, a gigantic hand-tufted flying (sort of) carpet, showcase a fascination with material manipulation, absurd forms, and bodily reference.

besides making our own things, we really like to turn other people’s ideas into great things, from set design projects to custom creations and commissioned works to all other kinds of creative detours. we create things that surprise, delight, and things you won’t forget. so call us if you want to make some ridiculous things together.
